What is this?
Insect Displays. Critter Terrariums. Fairy Gardens. Bugs in Jars. All of the above!
Are the insects you use real?
Yes!
Have you altered the insects in any way (paint, clear coat, glitter)?
Mother Nature is the original artist of all of my critters. I am just lucky enough to be able to position them so their full glory can be displayed.
Where do you get your specimens?
All of the local critters in my collection have been found by myself while on walks (I take A LOT of walks with my dog). I also have a wonderful community of humans with a sincere appreciation of insects who donate the specimens they find as well. It’s both very weird and wonderful to be excited about a bag of dead bugs being left on my door by a friend. The bugs from overseas were purchased through ethical sellers and collectors.
Do you kill bugs?
NO. All of the insects I use have lived out their natural born bug lives.
How long does it take to make one
Every element of each piece is intimately placed, like building a ship in a bottle. At the minimum, dry time excluded, 4 hours. I have made numerous displays that have taken around 40+ hours of flow concentration.
Will my bug last?
Your bug is a real insect so I do recommend displaying your piece out of direct sunlight, in a dry and clean space.
Is shipping available?
Yes, within the US (due to international shipping laws I am currently limited to the US only). Fortunately, each design is very sturdy making it perfect to send to your loved one OR to gift to your most curious of kid.
Do you create custom orders?
Yes! I love making special designs. I am always available at rankin.creates@gmail.com
Why the name, ‘the Huxley Collection’?
Great question! My shop is named after Thomas Huxley who was best friends with Charles Darwin. After Darwin’s passing, Huxley carried the torch of evolution. I thought that if anyone would appreciate my displays, it would be him. Also, fun fact, Thomas Huxley is the grandfather to Aldous Huxley (author of ‘Brave New World’) and numerous other prominent authors and scientists (male AND female!) throughout history.
How did you start?
You can find the genesis story on the 1st section of ‘The Metamorphosis,’ page
